PRs, PR-haters, PR-Day Parade Haters (this last group is forgiven), Salseros and Salseras:

Fog and a misty blanket of light rain did not stop Nova from hitting the South Street Seaport this Thursday for the official kick-off to the PR Day parade/salsa on the pier extravaganza! Divafish and C-mixto joined the fun, though C-mixto was looking for a fight because he came with a DR jacket to a PR event. He is not Dominican, so the fight would have been over notin.

The event started off depressing. It was a kiss-ass to the official sponsors–Coors Light and McDonalds, two companies contributing to oh so much in our community: sky rocketing obesity rates and ailing livers. Ronald McDonald (who apparently is a salsero too) choose the winners of a dance contest. Best did NOT win. When that travesty was finally over, Eddie Palmieri hit the stage and things got hot!

It was like dancing in a tropical rainforest: humid, muggy with a misty fog. C-mixto pointed out that it was like being in PR–testimony to its name, Rich Port, with the old colonial ships docked at the pier. Nova made her public debut, dancing with men who did not want to accept she was a beginner, slipping on the wet wooden planks like a sloppy pirate, though somehow never falling.

The bottom line is that we had a great time, remembering what real NY is all about. I officially de-virginized myself in experiencing my first “dance ’til your shirt is drenched in sweat” that I constantly hear salseros boast about. My bone necklace dyed my white t-shirt red, and together with an over-shirt of blue, I became the embodiment of the PR flag, a candle to Chango, shimmying through the aquatic colors of Yemaya.

Continues every Saturday at South Street Seaport during the summer with DJ Babaloo.

I am glad you had good time inspite the fast food and watery beer travesty…I love Eddie’s music.
