JPLogan asks…

Whatever happened to street performers?

“It only takes a great musician, battery powered amp, eye seeing dog and a banjo.  Subway music Boston style.”

JPLogan, they are still out there! I have been holding onto this CD for the day I figured out how to upload my own music onto the site (but alas, that might be awhile). Anyway, it’s live where he shines, not CD… So here, in all my years of living being conceived, birthed and raised in NYC I present the one street performer that stopped me in my tracks, gave me chills and will make me just take a seat to listen to him like I’m at Radio City Music Hall. Geechee Dan Singing Dragon: he sits on the uptown benches of the A, C, D, B lines with his little box that plays tunes and belts out in song like no other. His voice is unnaturally amplified without the aide of a microphone, and he gets real into his soulful songs with a grin. He says he’s from New Orleans, I think, African-American but also descendent of a Chinese clan of some sort (his words!). If you ever pass Columbus Circle, if you suddenly feel you are in a Sunday Church and a voice is beaconing you to find its source, it’s probably Geechee.

What about a saxophonist? I have so much respect for a man who can play this instrument. It moves me and brings tears to my eyes. If I am not mistken there is a gentleman at the 53/Lex Queensbound E stop. Just him and his sax. I can’t handle too many props. It takes away from it’s rawness.
I have yet to see Geechee. I usually stand near the woman who sings like a combination of Aretha/Chaka Khan. I appreciate her because she just shows up and sings her heart out. Usually still has her jacket on. Nothin fancy.

Bianca found another group on the 116th street 1 train stop- a band, really.
